Increasing your fertility does not mean you must undergo complex procedures and costly hormonal treatments. Simple tips like avoiding unhealthy habits or specific products that can aggravate contribute to infertility can go a long way towards helping you fall pregnant. Here are a few simple pregnancy tips you can try tonight.
Tip One: Keep your distance from cigarette smoke – even second hand smoke
Studies have shown that smoking decreases fertility – according to the British Medical Association, female smokers are 40% less likely to conceive than women who do not smoke. It’s not easy to say exactly why this is so since there are many chemical compounds in cigarette smoke. However, researchers hypothesize that some of these chemicals may initiate an imbalance of hormones, which can create irregular menstrual cycles or lack of ovulation. In addition, chemicals in cigarette smoke can also cause abnormalities in mature eggs. Finally, if a female smoker does get pregnant, she’s still at a higher risk of an early miscarriage than her non smoking friends.
Just because you are a non-smoker does not necessarily put you in the clear. Passive smoking, or inhaling secondhand smoke, has also been linked the likelihood of infertility or miscarriages. To protect your fertility simply stay away from cigarette smoke – even if it’s your partner. If he is a smoker, you might point out that smoking has also been shown to lower sperm counts.
Tip Two: Use foreplay to liven your sex life up
A normal problem for couples trying to conceive is a lack of excitement in their sex lives. With the stresses of work combined with the pressure of a ticking biological clock, and busy daily routines, sex, for most couples, simply is not as juicy as it used to be back when you were still dating. So, instead of going straight to intercourse, spend time in foreplay. Foreplay has been shown to increase your fertility in a couple of ways. The most obvious way is that it will help you feel more relaxed.
Secondly, longer foreplay also encourages natural vaginal lubrication. This is especially important if you are on fertility drugs as they tend to cause vaginal dryness. Also, if you are using a lubricant, think again. Leading lubricant brands act as spermicide, even if they are water-based and contain no spermicidal chemicals, because their pH levels are too acidic. Sperm require an alkaline environment in order to survive.
Tip Three: Use sex positions that help conception
When trying to fall pregnant, it makes the most sense to use an orientation that makes the trip as small as possible for the sperm. The traditional sex position with the male on top is one of the best because sperm need only to travel a short distance to the uterus. Another positive position for conception is the rear entry position, with the woman either on her hands and knees or on her stomach.
Fertility specialists also recommend that women lie down on their backs after intercourse and “bicycle” for several minutes. This is reported to help the sperm arrive faster. It’s not fancy, but it may just work and would probably be good for a laugh.
